When Is The Best Season For Planting?

Jan 13, 2025 |

As you start collecting new plants for your garden or yard, you may be eager to put them in the soil as soon as possible. However, the time of year matters greatly, as the season can determine whether your new plants will thrive or die.

Variables like temperature, moisture, and sunlight can impact your plants, and each species has different preferences. So, here’s what you need to know about which season is best for planting each type of plant.

Trees and Shrubs

Most trees and shrubs prefer cool soil and moderate temperatures, so the best time to plant them is in early spring. While you could plant them in the fall, you’ll need to put in extra work to ensure they can survive the winter (especially if you get ice and snow where you live).

Planting trees and shrubs in the spring gives them ample time to grow their roots and acclimate to the soil so that they’re ready for winter. If you plant them during the summer, the heat could shock their root systems, causing them to die.

Flowering Plants

Flowering plants are delicate and sensitive, so you must take great care when planting them. Some species are naturally frost-resistant (like pansies and snapdragons), so you can plant them in early spring, such as March or April.

Alternatively, other flowering plants that can’t tolerate frost (like petunias or hibiscus) should be planted in late spring or early summer (May to June).

No matter what time of year you plant, make sure to avoid putting your plants in the soil during the heat of the day. Ideally, the weather will be overcast and not windy. Morning is also the best time, as the soil isn’t too hot yet.

Vegetables

When planting vegetables, you need to know whether they’re cool-season or warm-season species. Cool-season veggies should be planted in early spring so they’re ready to harvest before summer arrives. Alternatively, you can plant them at the beginning of fall so they’re ready to go before winter sets in.

By comparison, warm-season vegetables need a lot of sunlight and heat, so you must make sure there won’t be any cold snaps once they’re in the ground. Typically, early to mid-May is the best time for planting these species because they’ll thrive all summer long.

Spring Bulb Plants

A patch of tulips, lilies, irises, or daffodils can truly brighten your yard or garden once spring arrives. However, to get the best results, you can’t plant these bulbs just before they bloom. Instead, you must plant them in the fall. These plants need to experience a cold spell so they can bloom correctly during the spring thaw. Alternatively, you can buy summer bulb varieties and plant them in early spring so they’ll flower during the summer.
